TechCareers Welding Available as Ebook

WACO, TX (PRWEB) October 26, 2011

“Now, more than ever, it’s imperative to let people know the real technical career options available to them . . . not through pie-in-the-sky projections but, rather, by the presentation of hard facts and documented evidence. Given that all this information is available as an ebook just makes access to it that much easier.” ? Michael Bettersworth, Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology Advancement, Texas State Technical College System.

TSTC Publishing?s newest entry in its TechCareer Series: Welding Technology is now available as an ebook, and the print copy will debut Dec. 1 on the book market.

TechCareers: Welding Technology offers employment overviews, skill requirements, education and training information and everything else needed for a career in the welding and metal-working business. The ebook is available on the Nook, the Kindle and other ereaders. The book, written by Joseph Abbott and Karen Mitchell Smith, provides an in-depth guide to the job-market potential of welding, as well as the requirements necessary to become a welder.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts there will be about 400,000 vacant welding positions by 2014 with not enough welders to fill them. The majority of today?s welders are from the retiring Baby Boomer generation, leaving the job market wide open for welders.

As of May 2008, the average hourly wage for a welder was $ 16.13 an hour, or $ 33,550 a year. The top 10 percent of welders made upwards of $ 25 an hour, or $ 52,000 a year. Welding engineers, the highest paid type of welders, on average make $ 39.34 an hour, or $ 81,827 a year. The salary, of course, depends on location, experience and education.

The book offers a list of job titles and corresponding duties welders can find in their industry:

????Boilermaker ? building and maintaining metal vessels and structures
????Pipefitter ? installing and maintaining pipe systems and supports
????Reinforcing and structural iron worker ? installing girders, columns and other construction materials
????Sheet metal worker ? making, installing and maintaining items made from sheet metal
????Underwater welder ? working on underwater projects like offshore platforms
????Welding machine operator ? setting up and taking care of welding machines
????Welding educator ? teaching others how to weld
????Welding sales ? selling welding equipment and supplies

Today, industries rely on the expertise of highly skilled welders because lives depend on the quality of welders? work. Welding is not just crafting two pieces of metal together. It requires technological savvy, too, with welders using newer technologies like lasers, electron beams and ultrasounds from behind a computer console operating a remote device.

?We are seeing more and more technology coming into play, so it doesn?t have the stigma of welders being high school dropouts that it once had,? says Dave Cotner, head of the welding program at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

From employment outlook to job duties to the necessary skill sets a welder is expected to possess, TechCareers: Welding Technology provides vital information any prospective welding student needs to know.

The TechCareers Series is a joint effort of TSTC Publishing, the publishing arm of the Texas State Technical College System, and TSTC Forecasting. The series includes: Biomedical Equipment, Automotive Technicians, Avionics Technician, Wind Energy, Computer Gaming Programmers & Artists and Welding Technology. Other forthcoming books include Aviation Pilots, Aviation Maintenance, Graphic Design and Radiation Protection.

Abbott is a native of Marfa, Texas, and a longtime writer and editor based in Waco. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in English and has written on various topics ranging from meteorology to space shuttle launches. Mitchell Smith is a longtime educator and freelance writer from Weatherford, Texas.

Established in 2004 as the publishing arm of the Texas State Technical College System, TSTC Publishing offers faculty throughout the country the opportunity to initiate and participate in a variety of book development projects. TSTC Publishing projects now include such ancillary products as instructor guides, student workbooks, CD-ROMs, DVDs, ebooks and companion websites. In addition to offering editorial help and guidance to faculty, assistance also is available in the areas of materials production, distribution and sales.

Menomonie, WI (PRWEB) October 26, 2011

StrandVision Digital Signage today unveiled a new screen saver capability for StrandVision Digital Signage networks that extends companies’ signage networks to employees’ desktops to further reinforce employee communication messaging.

Designed to bring corporate announcements directly to employees, it is ideal for human resources communications of employee benefits, reinforcement of corporate goals/missions, general business marketing, news and events or special announcements, such as weather-related bulletins. Compatible with Microsoft Windows operating systems, the screen saver application plays the same content that streams over customers’ StrandVision Digital Signage network on digital signage player screens throughout a facility and internal and external websites.

“This is a powerful and efficient way to consistently communicate with employees and visitors,” commented Mike Strand StrandVision founder and CEO. “The StrandVision Digital Signage Screen Saver enables companies to get the most out of their digital signage networks by utilizing existing equipment that is temporarily inactive. We’ve designed a system that fits with corporate networking and computer management protocols while substantially extending the reach of the digital signage network for employee communication and business marketing opportunities.”

The application can be distributed in the same manner that other standard corporate applications are deployed. Once installed on an employee’s personal computer, the application becomes a dropdown selection in the Screen Saver Settings dialog and works the same way as any other screen saver.

StrandVision Digital Signage Screen Saver content is distributed over companies’ standard computer networks. A StrandVision preconfigured, on-premise server or Linux signage player is required for installations of more than 10 computers, which reduces subscription costs and network traffic while increasing efficiency. Pricing starts at $ 499 per year and goes as low as $ .17 per desktop per month for larger installations. The StrandVision Digital Signage Screen Saver is available immediately from StrandVision and through authorized resellers.

About StrandVision

StrandVision LLC, based in Menomonie, Wisconsin, delivers low-cost, Web-based digital signage software through a patented Software as a Service (SaaS) approach that delivers content to subscribers’ LCD flat panel screens, as well as computer screens and websites. StrandVision’s service distributes text and graphics pages, video content and national and local weather and news. It is ideal for many large and small business marketing applications, including medical and dental offices (patient education); banks, retailers and industrial distributors (video merchandising); education (student communication, staff and visitor information); employee break rooms (employee communication of events and benefits); non-profit and religious organizations (member and supporter communications).

StrandVision also offers PC-2-TV.net, a fully digital, high-definition (HD) video extender to connect a computer to a television over long distances for use with digital signage and many other applications. University of South Dakota Joins HeartRox? Initiative

Vermillion, SD (PRWEB) October 26, 2011

HeartRox.org today announced that the University of South Dakota has joined Project HeartRox, a nationwide initiative to screen student athletes for potentially serious suspected heart murmurs. Although most cardiac murmurs are not cause for concern, certain murmurs can be possible indicators of heart disease, which can lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) among young athletes.

Approximately 10,000 students attend The University of South Dakota, which was founded in 1862 and is the state?s oldest university. Athlete screenings at USD will be conducted using state-of-the-art technology designed to support primary care providers in analyzing cardiac sounds for the identification and classification of suspected murmurs. According to Shant Hovnanian, founder of HeartRox, USD is the first university to take part in the Project HeartRox outreach program, which aims to bring this technology to thousands of schools nationwide to help eliminate SCD among athletes in America?s schools. “USD?s collaboration with local medical personnel and nonprofit health organizations is a model for other schools to follow,” Hovnanian stated. Hovnanian is also an advocate of the American Heart Association?s 12-step cardiovascular screening recommendations for athletes, which may also help reduce SCD.

?One of this country?s greatest resources is its children and young adults. With their ever-increasing level of participation and competition in athletics it becomes vital to identify underlying cardiac abnormalities prior to an unfortunate situation,? stated Dr. Patrick Hauer, an Associate Professor in USD?s Physical Therapy Department. ?Technological advancements have allowed for significant improvements in examination procedures performed by health care professionals; this now is also the case with cardiac auscultation. Implementing Computer-assisted Auscultation may prove to be a very effective, reliable, user-friendly and cost-effective method to help identify cardiac pathologies.?

Although Sudden Cardiac Death in young athletes is rare, incidents of SCD continue to make national headlines and are an ongoing cause for concern among school systems and universities around the country, as well to student athletes and their family members. The mission of the Project HeartRox outreach program is to bring the technology to thousands of schools nationwide in an effort to help eliminate SCD among student athletes.

HeartRox is sponsored by Zargis Medical, a medical device company focused on improving health outcomes and cost-effectiveness through software and products.
